Finally an abnormal result in my bloodwork. I'm Vitamin D deficient. I'm on Vitamin D3 supplements now. We'll see what the results are.
Vitamin D deficient symptoms: chronic fatigue, physical weakness, anxiety, sleep disturbances, headaches, cramping of toe, foot, and calf muscles, muscular aches, restless legs, pins and needles sensations of the hands at night time or hands and legs during the day time, bloating and indigestion, chronic diarrhea or chronic constipation, night sweats, and chronic allergic nasal congestion.
Do you think maybe my fucking doctor could have thought of that one? Nice lady, well qualified, good doctor, teaches new doctors in the medical school... but I'm the one that has to find references to Vitamin D deficiency and muscle spasms online and ask for the test?
I have asked for every other test known to mankind (minor exageration), and she has been really good about trying all the things within all the books for fibromyalgia, but...
She has been supportive of my various naturopathic experiments (and reviewed them to see if i would poison myself) and has referred me to dieticians. She gave me prespcriptions and letters for acupuncture, massage and physiotherapy.
She's signed all my notes and given me referrals to specialists. I've been to see the specialists. None of them could have thought of it?
I asked them if there wasn't some kind of fucking database that they could put my symptoms into and then we could work our way through all the possibilities. No.
Goddamn - I'm a computer guy in Canada - who doesn't drink milk. Do you think there a fucking possibility that I might be Vitamin D deficient?
I know it's obscure and that they are trained to deal with things that are a little more straightforward, but this really hurt. For years.
If this cures me I suspect I will be both pleased and really mad.
I'm one week into the vitamin D therapy and the pain in my thighs went away 2 days ago. That's the first time in years.
Maybe it's a placebo effect. Maybe not.
Hoping it works.

this sort of thing is typical with a lot of ailments. i had a doctor who didn't believe i had celiac disease. imagine her surprise when all my symptoms went away when i took all the gluten out of my diet.
sometimes we patients have to arm ourselves.
I'm taking the Vitamin D therapy too. Make sure the one you are taking has Calcium with it as one won't work without the other. I use Caltrate brand. Also, not sure if you know,
your body can only absorb 600 mg at a time so I have to take it twice a day.
you know how i have fought with the medical community - recently and with my daughter.
it pays to be an educated consumer and your health care is no exception. If you don't advocate for yourself (and your kids) no one else will.
hugs!

600 mg? 600iu i am guessing
my doctor told me to take 800iu a day, but didn't mention the 600 absorbtion limitation. i will read further
that means i will have to change my pattern of taking it
thank-you for the tip
terry, cole:
i hear you on the personal research
...and i don't expect doctors to be miracle workers or have magic powers - and i don't blame my doctor - she did right by me
i just expect a rational approach. and relying soley on the memory and ideas of the doctor does not seem rational to me
i spent several years reading books, journals, and internet articles that i didn't really understand (without a background in biochemistry)
i came up with the calcium and magnesium thing - i cam up with the parathyroid test. i expect a little extra work on my doctor's part. i even asked her that if she was too busy, couldn't she ask one of her students to look up the details surrounding blood chemical deficiencies and muscle spasms
didn't happen - just me plugging along - asking for a couple of new tests every month...
Perhaps the excessive pain in your thighs was from all of the hot Smitten Whoopie?! ~snicker~
I'm hoping it continues to work too. :)
Ok, I have the bottle here. It's 600 mg of Calcium and 400 IU of Vitamin D. It's one pill combining the two. Check out the absorption issue because the dietician prescribes 1200mg of Calcium a day but it has to be taken at different times because of absorption.
I'm not sure if Vitamin D is has limited absorption.
SignGurl: thanks for that elaboration. i take calcium, vitamin D, malic acid, and magnesium together because i read that all four have to be present for proper absorption
i thought my problem might be calcium deficiency - but my blood tests didn't show it
i have, however, cvut my 100iu tabs in half and am taking half in the morning, and the other half at noon, and leaving the regular amount in my calcium and multivitamin for the evening
(less than 4000iu a day is considered just fine in all the reading i have done)
